The World Selection Committee is an independent body, which has been charged by the General Conference with making recommendations on the composition and method of work of its committees and to consider requests from non-governmental organizations to be present at committees dealing with issues that they have expressed a special interest in. In this way, the Committee hopes to ensure that the decisions of the General Conference are made in an informed and objective manner.
The Selection Committee, which includes experts from many different countries, has recommended that the number of members be increased to 11 and five alternates, up from a current seven. It also recommends that members serve for a two-year term, instead of the one year they are currently appointed for. The increase is meant to promote collegial debate, diversity of viewpoints and the secrecy of each member’s vote.
At this point, a member’s position should only be filled by someone who is able to make a contribution to the discussions of the committee and whose presence would be beneficial to its work. In addition, there should be a list of potential alternates for each member, who could be asked to serve in case of an emergency or conflict of interest.
KATY, Texas (October 19, 2022) – Eleven of the top gymnasts in the U.S. gathered Tuesday night for the first day of competition at women’s world team selection camp. Defending Olympic champion Simone Biles is in fourth place at the halfway mark, 0.850 points behind co-leaders Shilese Jones and Kaliya Lincoln. The top four qualify for the world championships, which start October 29 in Belgium.
Biles has a good chance of breaking Vitaly Scherbo’s record of 32 world and Olympics medals. She needs just a single medal at the worlds to tie him, though she will likely face tough competition from other decorated gymnasts.
Biles is in the best shape of her career, and she posted a strong score on balance beam. She will look to continue her winning streak in Friday’s final on vault, where she has a huge advantage over Jones.
Jones is in second on vault, but she struggled on the uneven bars. She could still secure a spot on the worlds roster with a strong performance in her strongest event, floor exercise, which is the final on Sunday.
