About Committee News
In addition to examining specific government departments and running inquiries, select committees also make a wide range of laws. If a bill is approved by the committee it will be reported to the House for consideration, often with extensive amendments. Once the committee has finished deliberating on a bill, it will vote to decide what action to take. The committee can report the bill as voted on (with or without amendment) or table it. The committee can also choose to write its own report, which will include the results of its deliberations. If a bill is reported it will be given a new number and added to the legislative history of the House (see How Our Laws Are Made).
